Shroudfall Tournament Recap: Capital Clash

Hey folks, Bernhard here! After Daniel walked you through his experience at the Spring Bash tournament last week, it’s now my pleasure to report from another battlefield entirely: the first Shroudfall tournament in Berlin.

Of course, I could not resist bringing the Umbral Veil list I talked about in my previous blog post. Well… almost the same list. After some spirited discussion in the Shroudfall Discord, I made a last-minute adjustment. Out went the Deathspitter Brutes, and in came the Goreclaw Brutes instead. Sometimes you just want more claws. And more Red Essence.

Sock and Awe

Before dice were rolled and plans were ruined, the Shroudfall team made sure to arrive in proper tournament attire.

Some teams wear matching jerseys. Some wear serious gaming uniforms.

We wear panda socks. Honestly, morale was unmatched.

Round One – Bloodthorne Rhapsody

vs. DropInD | Scenarios: Ley Line / Scented Surprise

My first matchup was against Bloodthorne, led by none other than Morgath himself.

As expected, the game quickly turned into a grim contest of attrition. Bloodthorne units are not known for their gentle bedside manner, and Morgath’s forces steadily pulled ahead in raw casualties. Things were dying, and unfortunately many of those things were mine.

However, while my opponent was busy tearing through flesh and ambition alike, my agile Shadowstalkers were busy doing what they do best: being somewhere deeply inconvenient.

By dancing around the battlefield, slipping through gaps, and claiming objectives at just the right moment, I managed to secure a scenario victory despite losing the attrition war.

A very Umbral Veil way to win.

Round Two – The Austrian Line

vs. Blizzil | Scenarios: Mine Mountain / Raiders

The second round paired me against a familiar face: fellow Austrian traveler Bernd “Blizzil”, commander of the ever-reliable Silver Line. Bernd has been part of the Shroudfall journey since before the public beta and knows his faction inside and out. His forces were disciplined, durable, and entirely uninterested in my plans succeeding.

To make matters worse, I opened the game with some truly dreadful rolls in round one. Bernd played a clean, controlled game, dominated the scenario, and beat me fair and square.

No excuses. Only vengeance. Probably later.

Round Three – Two Weavers, One Regret

vs. Peppe | Scenarios: Mine Mountain / Ley Line

My final match was against a local Berlin player running a fascinating Silver Line list featuring two Essence Weavers: Count Wealton Adamant and High Warden Elara Steelheart. It was durable, flexible, and full of nasty decision points. It also punished two mistakes on my part.

Mistake One - Mine Mountain Madness: One of the scenarios was Mine Mountain, and for reasons I can only describe as temporary tactical delusion, I believed I could compete with Silver Line there.

I could not. There are bad ideas. There are risky ideas. And then there is voluntarily challenging heavily armored objective specialists on a mountain full of victory points. Lesson learned.

Mistake Two - The Elara Problem: When Elara surges forward and starts setting up her glowing sphere of defensive inevitability, the correct response is usually simple: Ignore her. Go elsewhere. Hit softer targets. This was, in fact, my plan.

Then, in the heat of battle, I abandoned that plan and attempted something “clever” instead: placing a manifestation to block reinforcements and control space. It worked… less well than I had hoped. Instead of pivoting toward weaker objectives, I got dragged into the wrong fight, at the wrong place, at the wrong time and paid for it.

Curtain Call – Lessons Learned

All in all, it was a fantastic event with great opponents, great games, and exactly the kind of tournament experience you want at a gaming event!

So what did I learn?

  • The army list performed nicely. The Goreclaw switch felt strong, and the overall build had tools for every matchup.

  • I am, however, dangerously tempted to add a fourth Spinebreaker Brute. Science demands it.

  • Against Silver Line, I vetoed the wrong scenarios. I shall not allow a Silver Line player to choose Mine Mountain against me ever again.

Berlin was a blast, and I’m already looking forward to the next tournament. Now it’s back to the lab, back to the drawing board… and possibly back to painting another brute.

As always ... break the game!
