The First Cinder: Meet the Kazyr

For most people in Astira, the Ashen Crown is not a welcoming place. Smoking mountains, obsidian plains and rivers of basalt shape a land that never seems to stand still. For the Kazyr, it is home.

Zyrena, the Cinderforged Champion, leads the Kazyr from the front, carrying the fire of Veyr-Ashaal into battle. I wonder what her Leadership might be?

They call it Veyr-Ashaal, the Crown That Breathes. Generations of life among fire and Essence have shaped their culture around one simple truth: the world changes, and those who live within it must learn to change with it.

The Kazyr do not worship fire. They learn from it.

A Flame Is Never One Thing

Every Kazyr child learns that even the smallest flame contains three aspects: Ember, Cinder and Flare.

Together, they form the Threefold Path, a philosophy that shapes Kazyr life and warfare.

  • Ember represents understanding, learning and discovery.

  • Cinder represents endurance, discipline and resilience.

  • Flare represents courage, ambition and action.

None stands above the others. Knowledge without action achieves little, action without restraint becomes recklessness, and neither matters without the strength to endure.

And if you're wondering what any of this has to do with their rules...

Take a look at a sneek peak of the Kazyr faction mechanic.

From Cinder to Flame

Kazyr armies have a few ways to place Cinder markers on the battlefield.

To the Kazyr, Cinders are more than lingering embers. They embody potential: the quiet moment before change, the strength that remains after the flame, and the unpredictable nature of fire itself.

Cinder markers spread across the battlefield, storing potential for the Kazyr to harness or consume.

On the battlefield, Cinder markers provide powerful passive effects to nearby Kazyr units, shaped by their Essence Weavers. But Cinders are not one thing, one shape, or one power. Their potential can also be consumed, fuelling abilities that provide powerful short-term bursts.

This leaves Kazyr players with a constant choice: preserve their Cinders and benefit from their lingering effects, or consume them when the right opportunity presents itself. Every Cinder spent is one less resource for the turns ahead.

The Flareborn Skirmishers can consume a Cinder to gain a significant speed boost.

But don't wait too long. Your opponent won't simply stand by while you prepare your assault. Cinder markers can be destroyed by your opponents, disrupting carefully laid plans and extinguishing their potential before it can be realised.

Do you consume the Cinder before you, or preserve its potential for what comes next?

This is only the first Cinder. Over the coming weeks, we’ll reveal more of the Kazyr, from their units and rules to the stories and miniatures that bring Veyr-Ashaal to life. Keep your eyes on the Shroud. Things are about to heat up ...
